I became a fan of the American Oystercatcher when I discovered a nest in the middle of a paused construction site on a man made island in the Lake Worth Lagoon in 2014. I reported the nest to the county department that was building the island only to find out the construction was to start back up within 3 days. The county department made arragements to protect and monitor the nest. The AMOYs had a successful clutch and raised 3 chicks. I have been watching the same pair nest each year since. The original island was built to improve the water quality and was meant to be under water at high tide but since the arrival of the AMOYs the island has been improved to add height above high tide and to have large bolders placed around it to prevent errosion from boat wakes.
